China National Opera & Dance Drama Theater
The Spirit of Chinese Intellectuals (Shi Feng)
“An intellectual must have a broad and strong mind, for he has embarked on a long course of heavy responsibilities.”
China regards the spirit of intellectuals (shi) as a time-honored tradition. Over the last 2500 years, the spirit of intellectuals has served as the cornerstone of traditional Chinese culture. It’s because of these broad-minded intellectuals that human civilization lasts forever. With great aspirations and responsibilities, they embrace the morality of sages through their behavior and words, pursue the spirit of benevolence, righteousness, manners, wisdom, and trustworthiness, and epitomize the essence of our traditional culture. In the performance, a large cast of talented dancers build on this ancient spirit and bring lost traditional values to the stage.
